This article takes advantage of a quasi-experiment in the Latino National Survey LNS to examine the effects of exogenous events on identity. This event provides the opportunity to examine differences in self-identification among comparable populations. I divide the LNS into a control group interviewed prior to these demonstrations and a treatment group interviewed after. My analysis shows respondents in the latter group were more likely to identify as American, with effects concentrated among Spanish speakers, and particularly Mexicans and Dominicans. These findings run contrary to the expectations of much existing literature, which assumes an increased sense of group threat results in heightened pan-ethnic sentiment across the Latino population. In calculating the moving wall, the current year is not counted. For example, if the current year is and a journal has a 5 year moving wall, articles from the year are available. Major theories of comparative politics about the influence of social movements, religion, and the left would also predict more equal legal treatment of sexual minorities in the United States than in Mexico. Yet, our review of important gay rights legislation in the two countries shows the opposite. We find that this puzzling outcome exists when comparing national-level laws, but not in comparing subnational policy outcomes. In both countries, state governments have control over many important gay rights policies, and evidence from the state level supports theoretical expectations about social movements and left governments, but not religion. Comparative research has found that countries with more powerful social movements, less religious populations, and strong left parties are more likely to extend equal rights to sexual minorities. The US has a much more powerful LGBT rights movement, a less religious population, and was governed by a centre-left party for a greater proportion of the past two decades than Mexico. We would therefore expect the US to have a much more egalitarian legal framework for sexual minorities than Mexico, but in fact, that is not the case. Mexico abolished most discriminatory legal distinctions based on sexual orientation long before the United States. Mexico decriminalised sodomy in , more than years before the US Supreme Court overturned anti-sodomy laws in The lone legal discriminatory point in Mexican law was a double penalty for corruption of a minor if it involved homosexuality. This provision was changed in In the Mexican Chamber of Deputies unanimously passed a national anti-discrimination law that included sexual orientation as a protected category, established a new agency to enforce the antidiscrimination law, and developed...

A stagnant global economy, tumbling commodity prices, rising populism, ongoing conflicts. But when Latin American leaders were asked to name the biggest challenge in their region for , the majority of them pointed to something else: Many other leaders have been embroiled in the crisis, which saw politicians taking kickbacks in exchange for state contracts. And in Guatemala, former president Otto Perez Molina will stand trial for allegedly masterminding a scheme under which bribes were paid to customs officials. Of course, none of this is new to the region. Every year, when Transparency International releases its Corruption Perception Index , Latin American countries consistently appear towards the bottom. But change is coming. In fact, for many analysts familiar with the issue, the latest round of corruption scandals is actually evidence that Latin America is starting to get on top of the problem. It looks like hard-fought progress. Corruption was in the past tolerated because many thought it helped everything run smoothly. Now people are starting to see corruption for what it is: The wake-up call seems to be starting to have a positive impact in the region. Slow progress, but all in the right direction.
