Log in or Sign up. I started this as a new thread as I bet many of us have this question. When I punch the thermostat up 2 or more degrees the aux heat strips come on, so I understand that, but how else will I know that the aux heat strips which equal high electric use are coming on. I suppose all models are different. I don't see any lights on my unit that would indicate the heat strips are running. Can I take the cover off? MefromMichigan , Dec 27, A quick and dirty way I can tell is that the air coming out of the vents is noticeably hotter when the aux heat is on. Feels as hot as my old propane forced air system used to. Popoff , Dec 27, There is nothing on the unit that will tell you aux heat is on. Some tstats will tell you. I really don't understand why the manufacturers want to hide this info. Palace GeoThermal , Dec 27, How do you tell when heat strip are on. AMI Contracting , Dec 31, As OP did not indicate a concern that it may not be working I didn't consider that angle. If our concern is whether aux works, I would turn it on while somebody watches the electric meter Avoids homeowners testing v circuits and costs nothing. If the question is how do we know when it is engaged aside from a 2 degree temp jump, I like the thermostat idea. AMI Contracting , Jan 2, Service person coming tomorrow. MefromMichigan , Jan 2, If you have DTE unit will have it's own meter. If your thermostat has an emergency heat setting you could use that to compare between what you presume is compressor operation and aux only. If you have Consumers for the electric other things in the house will impact electric meter usage. Let us know what you find out with service tech tomorrow. For what it's worth we are not a week out on our service calls and never have been. That's an awful long time to wait. Not on our watch. Mark Custis , Jan 2, Take a drive off the supply run, see if you can see the strip heaters "glowing". Geoapprentice , Jan 2, I've educated two ASHP owners in the past week about what...

And in that case, you should also call a professional for help. A heat pump is basically an air conditioner that can work in reverse to heat your home. It moves heat around from one place to another. In winter, it moves heat from the outside to inside your home. To make up the cold weather, your heat pump starts using a backup heat source to supplement its heating efforts. Most heat pumps use a strip of electric heat coils like ones in a toaster as a backup. However, those electric coils use a ton of electricity. That means higher energy bills for you. OK, so when you turn your thermostat to emergency heat, your heat pump will stop trying to extract heat from outside to heat your home inside. Instead it will use ONLY the backup heat strip to heat your home. So, your heat pump has now become an electric furnace. And those cost you even more money to run than a gas furnace. Yes, your heat pump will be running longer when it gets super cold outside. But if your heat pump has a trouble heating, you need to contact a heating contractor in Northern California for help and you may need to install a gas furnace as a more efficient backup heat source. I have noticed my heating bill is higher than my cooling bill now that I have installed a Heat Pump. I am trying to find a way to reduce this winter cost but am not sure how often electrical heat strips should run, if at all. I have never selected the "emergency heating" setting for my unit, its always in standard heating when in operation. I am in a CA climate which rarely ever drops below freezing so I was expecting the heat strips to never come on. Was hoping to find a way to permanently turn off the heat strips but don't want to risk damaging the unit. I heard from a source that "it is best to increase your heat setting by only two degrees at a time to prevent your auxiliary heat from operating. Basically, even during ideal conditions where outside temperature is above freezing, "emergency heat" is NOT used, and your only heating by two degrees F, should the heat strips still run for X hours a day during the heating season to maintain proper HP operation? I've been told that a properly sized heat pump should run almost non-stop during the days that the temperatures are the normal low for the season and area. Any lower than the normal seasonal lows would kick the strips on. I own a heat pump too with electric heat backup. It kicks on when the temps are below 30 degrees or the temp is raised to much manually, more than 2 degrees higher. Otherwise it does not come...
