A modern adaptation of the classic novel of the captain of a high tech submarine and his obsessive quest to destroy the enormousprehistoric whale that maimed him. Two parallel journeys, Bianca's and a young illegal immigrant's, end up overlapping, in search of an impossible salvation, despite an almost inevitable shipwreck. Captain Ahab's descent into madness destroys everyone around him. A mysterious explosion occurs at the Balam Bridge in Seoul on November 20th, Yoon Hyeok is from the same Unfortunately, this remake should have remained undone. Despite reputable actors, the film does not touch and the tension never arises. The directing and the screenplay is weak, e. The madness of Ahab comes out as likable and understandable and the rationality and the sense of Starbuck appears theatrical. The three harpooners play inconspicuous parts in the film instead of adding to the tension. Ishmael - poorly played with a constant snug smile by Charlie Cox - looks simply ridiculous throughout the film. In summary a disappointing remake. Start your free trial. The film tells of a sea captain's maniacal quest for revenge on a great white whale who has bitten off his leg. Ahab meets and falls in love with Faith, the daughter of the local minister, after disembarking in New Bedford. She falls in love with him and is heartbroken when he leaves on another voyage, but saying she will wait three years for him to return. During this next voyage, Ahab loses his leg to Moby Dick, a legendary white whale. When Ahab returns to New Bedford, he mistakenly believes that the woman he loves no longer wants to see him due to his disfigurement, an opinion encouraged by Ahab's brother, who wants Faith for himself. Ahab vows revenge against the whale, and to kill it or be killed in the process, and returns to sea. Eventually, Ahab raises enough capital to buy and be captain of his own ship; but no one wants to crew with him because of his passion for destroying Moby Dick. Nonetheless, he directs his first mate to shanghai a crew—and unknowingly takes his brother on board. Although the crew mutinies, Moby Dick is sighted, and Ahab heads the harpoon boats out to spear him; driven with a bloodlust, he harpoons Moby Dick and kills him. The crew boils him down for whale oil, and they return to New Bedford, where Ahab and Faith are reunited. One foreign language version of the film of Moby Dick was produced. The film survives intact and has been broadcast on television [3] and cable and is available through Warner Archive DVD-on-demand. Moby Dick was considered a loose adaptation of the novel; Marc Di Paolo said it was "a poorly conceived and unfaithful version. Metz said the film excludes the novel's central character Ishmael and "produces a conventional Hollywood love story between Ahab and Faith, the invented daughter of Rev. Mapple, whose moral purity reforms Ahab from a bawdy sailor into a marriageable man. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article needs additional citations for verification. The book is sailor Ishmael 's narrative of the obsessive quest of Ahab , captain of the whaling ship Pequod , for revenge on Moby Dick , the white whale that on the ship's previous voyage bit off Ahab's leg at the knee. A contribution to the literature of the American Renaissance , the work's genre classifications range from late Romantic to early Symbolist. Moby-Dick was published to mixed reviews, was a commercial failure, and was out of print at the time of the author's death in Its reputation as a " Great American Novel " was established only in the 20th century, after the centennial of its author's birth. William Faulkner confessed he wished he had written the book himself, [1] and D. Lawrence called it "one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world" and "the greatest book of the sea ever written". Melville began writing Moby-Dick in February , and would eventually take 18 months to write the book, a full year more than he had first anticipated. Writing was interrupted by his making the acquaintance of Nathaniel Hawthorne in August , and by the creation of the " Mosses from an Old Manse " essay as a first result of that friendship. The book is dedicated to Hawthorne, "in token of my admiration for his genius". The basis for the work is Melville's whaling voyage aboard the Acushnet. The novel also draws on whaling literature, and on literary inspirations such as Shakespeare and the Bible. The white whale is modeled on the notoriously hard-to-catch albino whale Mocha Dick , and the book's ending is based on the sinking of the whaleship Essex in The detailed and realistic descriptions of whale hunting and of extracting whale oil, as well as life aboard ship...

Herman Melville's mad Capt. Ahab John Barrymore spends years hunting the white whale that got his leg. Got a grand surprise today. Someone had tracked down Moby Dick for me. A movie I've been looking for a long while now. I won't reveal your name in case you don't want any publicity, but this made my day and was highly appreciated! I knew Moby Dick wasn't traditionally considered a great film, but it was a big release at the time with John Barrymore repeating his role as Ahab as he had done in the silent rendition The Sea Beast Needless to say the silent version was better then the early sound release and you could also see they took a few shortcuts on the action sequences using footage from the original film. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. John Barrymore is a fine actor and I found the giant foam whale in the two scenes he actually appears to be a charming antiquated special effect, but other than that this thing is a boring mess. Ahab's struggle with the white whale is hardly mentioned, instead it's brushed over in favour of a bland love story complete with a happy storybook ending. Suck it, Melville, with your themes and subtext, the people want romance! So, this is sort of like the "I, Frankenstein" of Moby Dick adaptations. The story of young, sexy Ahab and his great love. Oh, and he doesn't like this one whale, much. A few character names are the same. There's a boat and a whale. Other than that, it has nearly nothing to do with the novel. Review by Not Pauline Kael. In this talkie remake, directed by Lloyd Bacon, the girl is played by Joan Bennett. Dolores Costello had become Mrs....
